Adoption Process Checklist

If you are thinking about adopting or just curious on what we had to do, here is some of what we had to do during the process up to the referral:
Submit application and application fee to adoption agency to start the process.
Receive and complete I-600A form (Petition to Adopt) from INS.
Obtain 2 certified birth certificates from the state in which you were born.
Obtain 2 marriage certificates.
Send the I-600A, birth and marriage certificates, fingerprints, note that homestudy will follow, and fees to local INS office.
Send state criminal check releases, sets of fingerprints, plus fee to Oregon state police.
Read, sign, and return Adoption and Family Services Agreements along with homestudy/postplacement fees.
Send a small collection of photos for dossier.
Collect the following for the homestudy process, which will eventually go into your dossier:
Birth certificates
Marriage certificates
Employment letters
Statement of Assets
Last year's 1040 tax return
Physicians' letters
Police Report
Child Abuse Check
Three reference letters
Letter of Intent
Go through the process of obtaining your passport if you don't already have one.
Attend Pre-Adopt education classes.
Attend monthly support meetings.
Complete Homestudy
Send Homestudy and previous documents as your dossier to be translated and sent to China.
